Abstract

Central giant cell granulomas are a rare benign fibro-osseous lesion. There is no consensus on the best treatment protocol. We present the case of a young woman who reported pain in the lower mandible. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed an osteolytic zone in the right lower mandible, accompanied by a cortical perforation in the vestibular and lingual directions. Surgical currettage was performed under local anaesthesia. Histopathology revealed multinucleated giant cells and after exclusion of other giant cell lesions, the diagnosis was central giant cell granuloma. The healing process was uneventful and no recurrence was noted 1.5 years after surgery. The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as an additional imaging modality was undertaken with the objective of excluding the possibility of recurrence.
