Abstract

The term “tooth wear” is an umbrella term for physiological and/or pathological non-caries-related processes that lead to an irreversible loss of tooth structure starting from the surface. These include abrasion, abfraction and attrition, which are dealt with in this first part. Demastication and erosion follow in the second part. The individual defects are rarely found in pure form, but are mostly mixed forms, which makes it difficult to identify the causes. The illustrations attempt to present as clear an etiology as possible.
