Abstract

The Swiss Centre for Quality Control carries out external quality controls for medical laboratories and biological sterilization controls for autoclaves. In the period from 2008 to 2012, 209 dental practices carried out 4709 sterilizations of biological indicators - spore strips containing Geobacillus stearothermophilus. The median number of sterilizations per participant was 20, with steam-operated autoclaves achieving better results than chemiclaves. The control showed that the spore strips were not sterilized correctly in 99 cases (2.1%) and that 61 participants (29.2%) were confronted with one or more ineffective sterilization(s). Furthermore, we did not observe any improvement in performance during the period mentioned.
