Lichen planus (synonym: lichen ruber; in the oral cavity: oral lichen planus = OLP) is a common, chronic inflammatory disease that affects the skin and mucous membranes (especially the oral and genital mucosa). With a prevalence of 1 to 2%, lichen planus is one of the most common mucodermatoses and is more common in women than in men.
